PLAN THE JOURNEY BETWEEN THE PLACES

Getting around Sri Lanka.

Trains can be part of the experience, buses reach almost everywhere, and a private driver can save valuable time. The best Sri Lanka itinerary usually uses more than one way to travel.

CHOOSE BY JOURNEY, NOT HABIT

Choose the right transport
for each leg.

There is no single best way to travel around Sri Lanka. A good itinerary often combines rail, road and local transport depending on the route, your time and your budget.

SRI LANKA BY TRAIN

Sometimes the journey
is part of the trip.

Sri Lanka's railway is useful for selected intercity journeys, but it is also an experience in its own right. Use it where the route fits your itinerary rather than trying to build every journey around the train.

01

THE HILL COUNTRY CORRIDOR

Colombo → Kandy →
Nanu Oya → Ella → Badulla

The Main Line through Sri Lanka's central highlands is one of the country's best-known rail journeys. It can connect several important itinerary stops while giving you a very different view of the landscape from travelling by road.

SRI LANKA BY BUS

Buses go where
trains don't.

Sri Lanka's bus network reaches cities, towns and smaller communities across the island. It is usually one of the most affordable ways to travel, but the experience can vary greatly between local, intercity and expressway services.

01

HOW TO THINK ABOUT THE NETWORK

Local connection.
Intercity journey.
Expressway shortcut.

Don't think of every Sri Lankan bus as the same experience. The right service depends on whether you are moving around a town, travelling between regions or using one of the island's expressway corridors.

01

BEST FOR

Budget travel & network coverage

Buses become particularly useful when your destination has no convenient railway connection or when local road transport is the simplest final leg.

02

RESERVATIONS

Some long-distance buses can be booked online

Online booking is available for selected services, but ordinary local buses should not be assumed to have advance seat reservations.

03

LUGGAGE

Pack with the journey in mind

Large luggage can make crowded or multi-transfer bus journeys less convenient. Consider the entire connection, not simply the fare.

02

CURRENT FARE SYSTEM

Check the fare when you travel.

Current NTC revision: 24 March 2026

Bus fares are regulated and published by the National Transport Commission. Tripbook does not hard-code route fares because revisions can make static prices outdated.

TRIPBOOK TAKE

Use buses for their greatest strength:coverage and value. If comfort, large luggage or several transfers start making the journey difficult, compare the same leg with rail or a private driver instead.

TUK-TUKS, TAXIS & RIDE-HAILING

Perfect for the gaps
between the big journeys.

Local road transport is often the easiest way to connect a station, hotel, attraction or nearby town. The trick is choosing the right vehicle for the distance, luggage and location.

01

SHORT & LOCAL

Tuk-tuk

A flexible option for short journeys around towns, station transfers and local sightseeing where carrying large amounts of luggage is not a priority.

BEST FORShort hops, towns & local connections
02

MORE COMFORT

Taxi & app rides

Cars are usually more practical when you have luggage, need air-conditioning or want a more comfortable transfer between nearby destinations.

BEST FORLuggage, families & comfortable transfers
03

ARRIVAL DAY

Airport transfer

Bandaranaike International Airport provides an official airport taxi service and also lists app-based ride options among its ground-transport choices.

BEST FORA simple first or final transfer
01
Use an app where available

App-based rides can make the vehicle type, pickup point and estimated price clearer.

02
Agree before a non-app ride

If there is no app quote or functioning meter, confirm the fare before beginning the journey.

03
Think about your luggage

A tuk-tuk may be perfect for two people travelling light but inconvenient with several large bags.

04
Availability changes by location

Ride-hailing coverage and driver availability can vary by town, time of day and travel period.

04

APP & AIRPORT OPTIONS

Useful tools for local rides.

PickMe currently offers several vehicle categories, including tuk-tuks, cars and larger vehicles. Uber also operates in Sri Lanka, but app availability should always be checked for your actual pickup location.

TRIPBOOK TAKE

Use local rides to make the itinerary work:station → hotel, hotel → attraction, beach → town. For long cross-country journeys, compare rail, bus or a private driver before automatically taking a taxi.

TRAVELLING WITH A PRIVATE DRIVER

Pay more when it
saves you something valuable.

A private driver is rarely the cheapest option, but it can simplify a Sri Lanka itinerary dramatically when several places, transfers and bags need to fit into a limited number of days.

01

WHEN IT MAKES SENSE

One vehicle.
Several travel problems solved.

A driver becomes particularly useful when public transport would require several changes, when your accommodation is away from a station, or when you want to stop at places between major destinations.

LUGGAGE

03

BEFORE YOU AGREE

Clarify what the price includes.

01

Confirm whether the quote is for a single transfer, a full day or the entire itinerary.

02

Ask whether fuel, parking, highway tolls and waiting time are included.

03

For multi-day trips, confirm the arrangement for the driver's overnight accommodation and meals.

04

Confirm the vehicle size if you are travelling with several passengers or large bags.

TRIPBOOK TAKE

Use a driver strategically.

You do not need a private car for every day of a Sri Lanka trip. One of the smartest combinations can betrain for a memorable rail journey + driver for a difficult multi-stop road section + local rides inside towns.

DRIVING YOURSELF

Freedom comes with
a little more preparation.

Renting your own vehicle can give you excellent flexibility, but driving legally in Sri Lanka requires more than simply carrying a foreign driving licence.

01

BEFORE YOU TAKE THE KEYS

Make sure your licence
is valid for Sri Lanka.

Eligible international visitors can obtain a temporary Sri Lankan driving licence. A dedicated Department of Motor Traffic service is available at Bandaranaike International Airport for arriving travellers.

03

ROAD REALITY

Being legal and being comfortable are different questions.

01

Drive on the left

Sri Lankan traffic uses the left side of the road. Give yourself time to adjust if this is unfamiliar.

02

Expect mixed traffic

Cars, buses, tuk-tuks, motorcycles, pedestrians and animals can all share the same road environment.

03

Distance can mislead

Mountain roads, town traffic and slower local roads can make a short-looking route take considerably longer.

04

Check the vehicle too

Confirm insurance and required vehicle documents before accepting a rental vehicle.

IS SELF-DRIVE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Choose independence only if you are comfortable with the roads.

GOOD FIT

Confident drivers who want flexibility, understand the licence requirements and are comfortable adapting to unfamiliar road conditions.

COMPARE FIRST

First-time visitors with a short itinerary may find that trains, local rides and a strategically used private driver create an easier trip.

BEFORE EVERY TRAVEL DAY

Plan the transfer,
not just the destination.

A route can look simple on a map but still involve a station transfer, waiting time, luggage, traffic or a final local ride. Check the whole journey before you leave.

01

JOURNEY TIME

Confirm the real travel time.

Include transfers, station access, rest stops and the final journey to your accommodation — not only the distance between two towns.

02

LIVE INFORMATION

Recheck schedules before you leave.

Train times, bus services, road conditions and seat availability can change. Check the latest information close to the day of travel.

03

TICKETS & MONEY

Keep the essentials accessible.

Keep booking confirmations, identification and some local cash easy to reach, especially when combining public transport with local rides.

04

ARRIVAL

Protect some daylight.

Arriving somewhere unfamiliar is easier when you have time to find your accommodation, arrange the final transfer and understand the area.

05

IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS

Build in a buffer.

Leave extra time before airport transfers, reserved trains, tours and other bookings where a delay could affect the rest of your trip.

06

WHEN THE CONNECTION REALLY MATTERS

Add more margin than you think you need.

AIRPORT

Don't build an international departure around an optimistic road-transfer time.

RESERVED TRAIN

Allow enough time to reach the correct station and platform without rushing.

TOUR / SAFARI

Check the actual pickup point and how long the transfer from your accommodation takes.

CHECK LIVE INFORMATION

Use official transport operators and government services for current schedules, fares, road rules and travel notices.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you choose
how to travel.

The best transport choice depends on the route, your luggage, how much time you have and whether the journey itself is part of the experience.

01What is the best way to travel around Sri Lanka?+

There is no single best option for an entire trip. Many good itineraries combine trains for selected scenic or intercity journeys, buses for coverage and value, local rides for short transfers, and a private driver where difficult connections would otherwise consume too much time.

02Should I reserve Sri Lankan trains in advance?+

If a particular reserved train matters to your itinerary, booking ahead is sensible. Sri Lanka Railways currently allows online reservations up to 30 days before travel, with booking possible until two hours before departure when seats remain available.

03Can I book buses online?+

Yes, selected services can be booked online through official booking systems. However, not every local bus or route should be assumed to offer advance reservations, so check the actual service you plan to use.

04Can I use PickMe or Uber everywhere?+

App-based rides are useful in supported areas, but availability can vary by location, time and driver supply. Do not build an important transfer around an assumption that an app ride will always be available.

05Can international visitors drive themselves in Sri Lanka?+

Yes, provided you hold the appropriate driving authority valid for Sri Lanka. Eligible visitors can obtain a temporary Sri Lankan driving licence, including through the Department of Motor Traffic service at Bandaranaike International Airport. Check the current requirements before renting a vehicle.

06Is hiring a private driver worth it?+

It can be, especially for families, travellers with substantial luggage, multi-stop road journeys or short itineraries where several public-transport connections would consume valuable time. It does not necessarily make sense for every day of the trip.
